Match Report - Stanway Rovers Reserves Vs Saffron Walden Reserves

Reserves match report from SWTFC website.

Stanway Rovers Reserves 1

Saffron Walden Town FC 0

Saturday 29 August 2015

A new look reserve side, that contained just four of last season’s championship winning team, visited The Hawthorns to face a Stanway side that were coming off of a 5-0 win in their previous fixture.

A very disrupted pre-season campaign, that saw The Bloods play just three meaningful games, coupled with this being their first league game at a tough venue and against a strong side playing their third fixture, didn’t do anything for the Walden cause.

This was soon evident and the first half was a full bloodied backs to the wall affair, with both the slope of the pitch and a stiff breeze favouring the hosts. Some very staunch defending was required for the entire half, and the hosts were rarely troubled as Walden’s forays into their half were few and far between.

In truth, had it not been for some exceptional defending, particularly by a back three of James Richardson, Suyash Gurung and the excellent Ryan Dewey, the result could have been decided well before the break. This, and some woeful finishing by the Stanway forwards plus the agility of Paul Wood in the visitors goal maintained parity.

The three Under 18 players making their competitive debuts for The Bloods in the middle of the park must have wondered what they had let themselves in for, however they all acquitted themselves well and in Alex van Enis they had a contender for man of the match. If Walden could be accused of anything it would be the amount of time and space they allowed their opponents, showing them far too much respect, a subject that was ‘discussed’ during the very welcome break.

HALF TIME: STANWAY ROVERS RESERVES  0  SAFFRON WALDEN TOWN RESERVES  0

The second half began with a much more determined Walden taking the game to Stanway for the first time and playing the football that they are more than capable of. At the heart of the improvement was Dan Murphy-Moore and Ben Morrell, both largely anonymous in the first half, they began to bite at the heels of their opponents to stop them playing from the back and this had the effect of unsettling an up until then very dominant Stanway.

Aided by the strength of Ben Riches up top and the impressive Van Enis, and supported by the marauding runs down the flank of James Richardson the visitors began to create chances and making the home ‘keeper a lot less comfortable than during the first period.

Unfortunately however, with Walden now giving as good as they got, after 65 minutes disaster struck The Bloods. Just as it seemed that a home corner had been dealt with, the hard working Coby Game attempted to volley the ball clear but only succeeded in hitting a Stanway forward full in the back on the eight yard line and despite a brave attempt by Wood to claw the ball away it had enough impetus to spin into the top corner of the visitors net. A cruel goal indeed to concede, particularly at that juncture of the match.

However, for the remainder of the match Walden can be proud of their efforts to get back on level terms and both Riches and Gurung tested the home ‘keeper. As the game entered its’ final stages some robust but generally fair tackles were put in by both sides and the referee began to issue yellow cards. Sadly with just three minutes remaining one such tackle made Walden’s Murphy-Moore react with raised hands and both he and the perpetrator of the original foul were red carded.

FULL TIME:  STANWAY ROVERS RESERVES  1  SAFFRON WALDEN TOWN RESERVES  0

Saffron Walden Town Reserves: Paul Wood, Suyash Gurung, Ryan Dewey, James Richardson, Darren Wardley (Coby Game), Alex Van Enis, Dan Murphy-Moore, Dan Weeks (Jack Forster), George Chappell (Darren Wardley), Ben Riches, Ben Morrell. Sub not used: Jason Harvey.

Saffron Walden 2 Vs. Cheshunt 0 – FA Cup

Saffron Walden 2 – Cheshunt 0 – FA Cup

29th August 2015

I have been awake since 6am on a Sunday morning, reflecting on our epic FA Cup match, against Cheshunt. I am also slightly hung over, due to a beer festival in my village. A giant killing FA Cup win, and the choice of 30 beers just do not mix. I am in need of Mrs Nash’s cold flannel.

I arrived at the Meadows an hour before the game, so I could tie the flag up. A few of the Cheshunt players were warming up, and I was half expecting to be hit by the ball. So with one eye on the flag, and one on the ball, the flag was successfully hung. I took a ‘selfie’ for the blog and realised it was the first time I have been on the pitch since I was a kid. I missed last season’s pitch invasion, against The Bloaters.

I then enjoyed a bacon roll and chips, cooked by Andy. Ken and his team were setting up an outside BBQ and bar for the rush. I sat on the wall and had a catch up with Jackie. I was telling her that I had heard from Avis and he had two assists on his debut for his new club, Lakenheath.

I also have to mention Andy Greens ‘Beer’ sign, which he was very proud of. Ken, can you please give Andy a gold star for effort? (Picture below)

We started the match with a 1 minute silence, to show our respect to the poor victims of last week’s Shoreham air crash. Two of the 11 people who died were from Non-League side Worthing United.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt. #nonleaguefamily

It was time to get started. Walden were going to be tested against Step 4 club Cheshunt.

Wardley made more changes from last week’s narrow defeat against Mildenhall. I was really looking forward to seeing how the changes would make a difference.

Croll was in goal. Defence: Strong, Lawrence (Beast), Reid and Bell. Midfield: Snelling (Mashy), Fleming and M Abbott. Forwards: Calver (Wig), Gregory, and Turner (G Man). Subs: P Abbott, Harper, Murphy (Boss), Noble (Nobby), Crane, Souter and Wardly (Sticksy).

Walden kicked off the match. Cheshunt won the ball back and produced some early pressure. A cross was sent in, but the Beast headed it out of the 18 yard box. The ball fell to a Cheshunt player, but his shot was well wide.

We retaliated almost immediately thanks to some great midfield play. Gregory took hold of the ball, and won a throw on, in the Beast’s Territory. The fans called for the Beast to take it. The throw was good and found Gregory, but the whistle went for a soft push on the Cheshunt player. As you can imagine the fans disagreed vocally with the referee.

Cheshunt number 10, Adam Bolle, did break well and passed the ball to Marcus Milner. They did look dangerous on the brake, but Milner’s pass was flagged for off side.

Mark Noble took a great free kick near the dugout. Gregory and Turner (G Man) passed the ball well, and forced a throw on. Up steps the Beast, but the keeper caught it well.

Cheshunt's next threat came from number 4, David Hicks. He controlled the ball well and ran at the Walden defence. Snelling (Mashy) stuck to him like glue and ran him into Bell, who cleared the danger.

Wiggy continued to give their left back a hard time and whipped in a deadly cross. The cross was just slightly too high for Fleming, who came charging in from midfield. A foot lower and the keeper would have had no chance. Fleming was playing well and tracked back to pull off a well-timed challenge.

I have to say at this point, as it was on my Dictaphone, that Cheshunt’s number 8, Luke Illsley’s beard was impressive. I didn’t think anyone could match Grinrod’s beard, but Illsley’s beard was awesome.

Anyway back to the match with more great play from Wiggy and Abbott, which frustrated the defence. Wig was in the box and looked like he was tripped, but no penalty.

20 minutes had passed and we were pleased with the lads. Up to this point it was the best they had played all season.

Cheshunt had an excellent opportunity through Milner. He had a one on one with Croll, and pushed it to his left. Croll ran back to his goal, and saved Milner’s shot, giving Cheshunt a corner. The corner was well cleared by Fleming

Fresh from his holiday, Greg Strong was very impressive and made a very good tackle to deny a shooting opportunity. He handled it well and got the ball to G Man, rather than hoof a panic clearance. He should of put a sign up saying ‘You will not pass’.

Wiggy continued to impress after a great ball from Strong. He linked up well again with Noble. Wiggy had a great shot, which looked like a hand ball, but ended up as corner. Bell delivered a great corner, which found the Beast’s head, but went wide.

Our visitors broke again but Reid stood his ground. The Cheshunt player went down in the box and asked for a penalty, but the referee denied it.  Reid was not taking any nonsense.

32 minutes in and Mark Abbott pulled his hamstring, and was replaced by Joe ‘The Boss’ Muphy. I hope you recover well Mark. You had an excellent 30 minutes.

The Bloods were looking great, and the confidence was high. The team worked together, from the back to the front. The new look strike force of Turner, Gregory and Wig was working well, causing the Cheshunt defence grief. Gregory came very close with a sweet little turn, but his shot was defended well.

Wiggy followed it up by an excellent long range shot, which took a very slight deflection. The shot would have definitely been on target.

Soon after, Turner made a great run up the wing, to win a free kick. Spike took the free kick which was tipped over the bar from the keeper. The crowd were feeling positive. The ‘Come on Walden’ chants were getting louder.

The corner was taken long, which found Wiggy in space. Wig delivered the perfect cross for Reid to head home. Great goal and the pressure finally paid off.  Half time and the lads went in at 1-0 up.

Shortly after the half time whistle, I did my flag duties, and tied the flag behind the goal, at the Catons Lane end. Looking after the flag has been an honour Nigel. I hope you have liked the pictures.

Cheshunt came out early, eager to start the 2nd half. Mashy made an excellent run and slide tackle to win the ball. Mashy got trod on by Uade, which resulted in a yellow card and free kick to Walden.

Lady luck was on our side for the 2nd goal which came in the first 5 minutes. Gregory ran with the ball at the Cheshunt defence. He passed it to Wiggy, who delivered a forward pass to G Man. G Man beat his man and crossed the ball, low and hard , about 5 feet in front of the goal line. Joe Kizzy slid in to shield the ball, but as he got up, he kicked the ball into the back of the net. You had to feel for Kizzy. It was very unlucky. Credit for G Man though, for his wicked cross.

Walden were pressing for a third goal. Again the 3 Amigos linked up well and Wiggy had a shot which was saved comfortably by Williamson.

Soon after, Cheshunt did try to get back into the game. They had a good chance from a throw, but our defence closed the attack down well, and Croll collected the ball.

The Boss and Mashy partnership in the middle was looking threatening. They really took control of the midfield with Fleming backing them up. This gave another great chance for the forwards to string some passes together. Gregory made a lovely turn but his shot went over the bar.

Good effort from Bolle. His pass sent Milner up the wing, but Strong stood up well, and got the better of him. The communication was excellent between the back four. Strong was having an excellent game.

The rain started to come down but we didn’t care. We were winning and wanting more goals. Cheshunt had no way near given up and sent some great crosses in, but the Beast was not going to lose a battle in the air. He was even fouled a few times. Are you mad Cheshunt? You do realise his nick name is the Beast?

18 minutes in and Gregory went down holding his foot. He looked in pain and couldn’t continue, and was replaced by Louis Harper. Gregory had another great game and is enjoying his time at the Bloods. Hope for speedy recovery.

We were playing really well, and Wiggy took on half the team, and managed to get a shot, which was well saved by Williamson, to win us a corner.  Harper took a long corner, which was played back in, leaving Cheshunt no choice but to kick the ball out for a throw on. You’ve guessed it….The Beast chants were in full voice. The throw was good but Cheshunt’s number 7 was fouled.

I was so impressed with the way the defenders handled the Cheshunt pressure. Bell had a great clearance of the line to stop Cheshunt scoring. Soon after he broke, and dribbled the ball up the wing, and passed the ball forward to Wig. Wig’s shot was deflected for a corner.

30 minutes into the match, and the fans realised how much the referee looked like Percy from Blackadder. With my Rowan Atkinson looks, we almost had a full cast.

Reid continued to impress with another challenge. He linked up well with Strong to put off number 10 from getting his header on goal.

Another suspect decision by the referee denied us of a penalty which, if scored, would have surely finished the game off. Wig went on one of his skilful runs, making the defence dizzy.  He went down in the box but no penalty was given. Not a great call by Percy!

More pressure was being thrown at Walden, but Strong made a series of strong headers, diverting the danger. Cheshunt continued to try and get back in the game, but we were just too much for them.

5 minutes of the 90 remaining, and Mashy was replaced by Noble. Mashy had another very good game and has played well all season.

90 minutes on the clock and Cheshunt refused to give up. Reid played well and denied a good cross from finding its intended target.

Our last good effort was by Wiggy, who had a great opportunity to volley from a tight angle, but his shot went wide.

The full time whistle went and the match finished Walden 2 – Cheshunt 0. In my opinion, this has been the best I have seen from the Bloods all season. I wonder who will start against Haverhill Rovers on the 8th September? The Bloods played very well and got clean sheet. Is this the turning point? Let’s hope so.

It’s time for the fans Man of the Match. This was not an unanimous decision by the fans. The candidates were: Fleming, Wiggy, G Man, Reid and Strong. But I am pleased to revel that this week’s FA Cup MOTM goes to Greg Strong.

Well done Greg. You looked sharp throughout and marked Cheshunt off the field. Keep it up.

After the match I went to collect a Walden top for former 70’s/80’s Bloods goalkeeper K Neville, I asked Jon to pack away the flag. As I returned, I had seen that he ripped his jeans when he tried to leap from the railing. As you can imagine, Mrs Nash was in hysterics.

We then went to congratulate the lads and got them to pose for a photo, holding the flag.

There is no more first team action for 10 days, however I am off to see the under 18’s play on Tuesday, against St Neots Town. Kick off at 7.45pm. Can they continue their 100% win record in the Cambridge Division? No pressure lads, but I will be blogging. Who will be MOTM and headline the International Bloods Blog?

Thank you for reading. Up the Bloods

Mildenhall Town 1 Vs Saffron Walden 0

Mildenhall Town 1 – Saffron Walden 0

I do love a Tuesday evening match in August, with the sun beaming down, and the beer flowing. Sadly that was not the case last night. The rain had not stopped since 2pm. So armed with my waterproof and brolly, I headed off to Mildenhall.

I had not been to Mildenhall for many years, well since they stopped the Air Fete. I had been looking forward to the match since 5pm on Saturday. Not that I am obsessed or anything!

I arrived at the ground about 45 minutes before kick off, and was instantly impressed by the quality of the grass. Full credit must be given to the grounds keeper and his colleagues. I met up first with Lee and had a chat about how unlucky we were against Felixstowe and Walton. I went to find Paul Daw to get the team sheet, and to my surprise, was invited into the officials lounge for a cup of tea. My moment had come, and I was now unofficially part of the hierarchy! Well for one game anyway. If I would have known I would have put a tie on.

After my tea and biscuits it was almost time for kick off. The rain had stopped and looked like it would hold off. Surely we could get some points in the league?

Wardley made one change from Saturday’s loss. Croll was in goal. Defence: P Abbott, Reid, Lawrence (Beast) and Solkhon. Midfield: Bell, Murphy (Boss), Snelling (Mashy) and Noble. Forwards: Calver (Wiggy) and Gregory. Subs: Fleming, M Abbott, Turner, Grinrod, Harper.

We started the match kicking downhill. Mildenhall started the game well and kept the ball. The first Mildenhall threat was an early free kick, which Bell headed clear. Their number 2, David Cooper went for a ‘Worldy’ but the ball sailed over the bar.

Within 5 minutes, Mildenhall had scored. They had a free kick from the right side of the pitch. Solk’s was pushed over and fell on the ball. It was a very harsh decision. The goal was scored by Luke Butcher. I think that was his name, but please correct me if I am wrong. I was too busy stamping my feet at the time.  It was well deserved from great early pressure.

We did start to up our game, when Wiggy made an excellent challenge to stop a Mildenhall attack. He stood up well and managed to get the ball to Bell, who made a successful run and won a throw on.

During this time Joe ‘The Boss’ Muphy left the pitch. I had no idea he had left and was wondering what was going on. He soon jogged back on. Phew!

Snelling (Mashy) was up to his usual tricks and made a great run, 10 minutes into the match. He passed to Wiggy, who took on the right back. Wiggy got in his cross, but was cleared by Mark Shadrack.

We almost went 2-0 down, as a result of great play from Mildenhall. Bell ran back and cleared the ball off the line for a corner. It was a fantastic block. Bell is now showing he is back to full fitness. The corner was whipped in and well saved by Croll.

15 minutes in and we were struggling. The main threat from Mildenhall came from Cooper and the skilful Kelvin Elnard. Elnard’s speed on the ball was like lightning.

20 minutes in and Mashy showed some of his skills. He found Wiggy in space, who passed it back to Mashy. Mashy turned well and passed the ball to the sprinting Bell. Bell did get a cross in but no one was home. Walden had now upped their game.

Murphy found himself in the book for a slide tackle.

We continued to pressure Mildenhall, with a free kick taken by Reid. Reid delivered a dangerous ball, but it was headed out for a corner to Walden. The corner was taken long by Bell. The Beast managed to get his head on the ball, but the keeper caught it.

The Beast was doing his Captain duties, by barking orders at his defence to put in a tackle. Soon after, he made a great challenge to deny Mildenhall a shooting opportunity.

Our best effort of the half came from a great run from Solkhon, and link up play with Bell. Bell crossed the ball in long, which was slightly too high for Mashy.

The match started to get gritty with slide challenges from both teams. The ground was slippery with both benches calling for fouls.

Sam and Wiggy worked hard creating more chances. 30 minutes into the game Wiggy took on his man and got into the box. He hit the ball across the danger zone, but Mashy was about 1 second too late.

Mildenhall did react and were awarded 2 back to back corners, which were handled well by the defence.

Not long after some more pressure from the Bloods, Mildenhall’s star, Enaro broke free. Wiggy chased him back and put in an incredible tackle. If he had timed it slightly wrong, Enaro would have gone flying. While this was going on Solkon went down holding his hamstring. He couldn’t continue and was replaced by Turner ‘G Man’. Turner started well with a great run and tackle to snub out the pressure.

Mildenhall continued to pile on the pressure and crossed the ball into the mixer. We defended well and Mildenhall had a corner. The corner was well collected by Kroll.

We hadn’t given up on scoring in the first half, when Gregory made a great solo run into the box. Unfortunately at pace, he kicked the ball at himself and it went off for a goal kick.

First half ended Mildenhall 1 – Bloods 0. An improvement was needed if we were going to get back in the game.

I was feeling good about the second half, and knew the Bloods would come out fighting. Every game we have played so far, we have refused to let our heads drop.

Laurence (Beast) was replaced by Fleming. Laurence had been suffering for sinusitis and did well to get through the first half. Rest up Beast and come out fighting for the FA Cup game.

Mildenhall started with most of the possession, and their number 6, Callum Kearns had a great shot, which was well saved by Croll.

Mildenhall continued to push for the second, with the rain pouring. We decided to wimp out and sit in the stand.

Our first good effort came from The Boss. He broke well and made a great run up the middle, he managed to get a shot in from 30 yards out, but the keeper saved it.

The rain had stopped, so we went back behind the goal. I was feeling better, now we were in our rightful place.

After 10 minutes Croll pulled off the best save I have seen all season. Again Enaro was causing us grief, and got his cross in. The ball was fired at goal, and Croll dived and pushed the ball away. The Mildenhall fans clapped in appreciation for such a brilliant stop.

Soon after the heroics of Croll, Mashy had a nice run and passed to Wiggy. Wiggy took a shot which was curling, but the keeper saved it. It felt that since Croll made that save, we started to play with more confidence.

Much better play continued from Walden. Wiggy won a free kick near the corner. The corner came in and the referee blew his whistle. We were not sure if it was off side or a foul on the keeper.

Gregory had a great run and flicked the ball over the defender. As he went to shoot, his shot was blocked. I believed if we carried on like this, we could sneak a draw.

The Boss was replaced by Mark Abbott. Boss had played well again, and is continuing his good form for the season.

25 minutes to go and Graham moved up to his preferred attacking role, with Spike dropping back to left back. He made a great run up the right hand wing but his cross was well saved by Pope. Pope did stumble the ball, but in the end caught it.

30 minutes in and Mildenhall should have been 2-0 up. They had a clear chance on goal, but lifted it over the cross bar for a conversion. The Mildenhall fans where not happy, as that was a clear chance to see off the game.

Croll made another fantastic save from Enaro. After all these great saves, it was starting to look like we may just get back into this.

Turner retaliated with a decent effort. He chased down the ball, which deflected off the centre back. Turner got in front of the centre back, but his volleyed effort went over the bar. It was as a great bit of skill to get into the shooting position.

Mildenhall continued to push for a second, but they were no match for the Bloods defence. This was much better play.

Turner had another great chance. He worked hard to get into the box. He had a shot on goal but decided to pass it to Wiggy. Wiggy’s shot was cleared off the line. Turner kicked himself for not having a go himself. Head up G. You are getting better each game. I would like to see him start next week, alongside Gregory and Wiggy.

We continued to work hard and Wiggy made a fantastic run. The defenders could not get the ball off him. His ball was passed to Turner. Turner scored but was off side.

We had more attempts, and were getting the ball in the mixer a lot more than the first half. The ball just did not drop well enough for a clear shot. Mildenhall got in well and refused to let us score.  The matched finished Mildenhall 1 – Walden 0

I am pleased we came out fighting in the second half. Considering the only goal came in the first 5 minutes, we did well not to let them increase the gap.

For me, the fans ‘Man of the Match’ has gone to Floyd Croll. Croll made some incredible saves, which gave us a chance to get back into the match. Well done Floyd and hopefully you will have a quieter match on Saturday.

Personally I would like to thanks the Mildenhall staff, and the fans for making us feel very welcome. All the fans were mixed together and showing respect for one another. That is how football should be. There is nothing wrong with a bit of banter, as long as that’s how far it goes.

Next we have a tough match against Cheshunt in the FA Cup, on Saturday the 29th August. Let’s hope for a massive crowd, better weather and, most importantly, a win.

Thank you for reading.

Saffron Walden 2 Vs. Felixstowe and Walton 3

Saffron Walden 2 Vs. Felixstowe and Walton 3

22nd August 2015

2pm and I was watching the lads warm up. It was 28 degrees and I had my new personalised training top on. The first thing I thought was, rather them than me. I’ll stick to my cold lemonade, thanks. The fans were still buzzing from our midweek cup win. I spoke to last week’s hero Sam Soutar and he still had a big smile on his face. As always it was great to catch up with the fans who could not make Tuesdays match.

Wardely had made a few changes from Tuesday’s winning team. Croll was back between the posts. Defence: P Abbott, Reid, Lawrence (Beast) and Grinrod. Midfield: Bell, Murphy (Boss), Snelling (Mashy) and Noble. Forwards: Calver (Wiggy) and Gregory. Subs: Drane, Turner, Wardley (Sticksy) and Soutar.

We had Solkhon, Fleming, Harper and M Abbott missing.

I missed the first few minutes, as I was battling with the breeze, and tying the flag to the railings. I was half expecting to get smacked in the face with the ball. Well at least that would have given the fans something to laugh about.

In the first 5 minutes Felixstowe and Walton (F & W) started well. They are a team of solid looking players, who will be competing for a top 4 finish.

In the first 5 minutes we had a corner, which was handled well by the defence. Spike got the crowd going early with some great skill through the middle, and managed to get his shot away, which was comfortably collected by the keeper.

6 minutes in and Mashy looked threatening by linking up very well with Wiggy. Wiggy set Joe ‘The Boss’ Murphy, who shot to the keeper’s right, but was saved. If the shot had a better connection, the Keeper would have been picking it out of the back of the net.

The Bloods did come under early pressure, but Wiggy made an excellent challenge in the box and managed to break free. He was tripped by number 2 Bennet, and won Walden a free kick.

Shortly after, Sam Gregory made another great run, but again was tripped before he could shoot. Referee did blow up for another free kick, but F and W defended well. At this point in the match it was any one’s game.

F and W number 7 Sckall, was a right handful and made a great pass to number 4 Kerridge. Sckarr was quick and great on the ball. Mashy made a good challenge and The Beast cleared. This was the first time we could see how dangerous F and W could be.

15 minutes in and the pressure was mounting up. F and W had a free kick, but the Boss cleared the danger with a powerful header.

Spike continued to battle on the wing with a great run. His pass found Sam Gregory. Sam just could not get his shot away. Full credit goes to F and W number 3 Ainsley, for his well-timed tackle.

Shortly after, we went 1 -0 down as a result of some brilliant play by F & W. Bennet was extremely quick and managed to get passed Grinrod. He made an excellent pass back to Sckarr, and his strike was perfect leaving Croll no chance. Out of respect we applauded the visitors.

The Bloods responded well from going 1-0 down. Wiggy and Gregory continued to haunt the defence but just couldn’t find that killer shot. Bennet again stuck to Wiggy like glue, and marked him well. Not many right backs can do that, so it was a great battle between them.

20 minutes in and up steps the Beast for a throw on. Joe Murphy leaped well but his header was over the bar.

More pressure followed and Spike put in a great tackle to win the ball. He picked the ball up and made a brilliant run up the line. He got his cross in but the keeper held the ball well.

32 minutes in and Grinrod managed to get forward. He showed some great skill and passed the ball to Mashy. Mashy made the defenders sweat and won Walden a throw on. The Beast took it but it resulted in a goal kick.

Shortly after the goal kick the referee stopped the match for a water break. It was very hot, and ‘we’ were just standing behind the goal. The players did not look tired and soon got the game going again. If I had of been playing I would of passed out 3 minutes into the first half. You can tell that the management team have worked hard on the fitness levels.

Just when we hoped we would get back into the game, F and W strike again. The goal was very well done.  They played a long ball, which was flicked on by a header. The forward took the ball in his stride, and smashed the ball into the back of the net. Again Croll had no chance. I am sorry I do not know who scored, as it happened so quickly. I have to admit I was disappointed, as we were undone by quick and precise play. Sorry lads.

We responded just how the fans wanted. Wiggy took on Bennet and got the better of him. He tripped up but got straight back up. His shot just was not strong enough to trouble the keeper.

This was a battle of skill and pace. Bennet looked threatening going forward, and gave Grinrod a hard time. I think Usain Bolt would have struggled to keep up.

Mashy showed some great play, and worked really well coming forward. He passed the ball to Gregory. Sam showed of his pace and beat the defender. He got a strong cross in, and again the keeper caught the ball. It was well held as Sam didn’t hold back on his cross.

We continued to try and snatch a goal back and showed some great skill going forward, but just could not get a clear shot on goal.  The first half finished Saffron Walden 0 – F and W 2. It felt like a long walk back to the tea hut.

The Bloods were down but not out. Wardley work your magic please!

I had to take a quick break for breakfast before starting the blog for the 2nd half. I needed to get some energy, for the next 1000 or so words. They always say football is a game of 2 halves, and the Bloods sure proved that.

There was no shade from behind the goal. The sun was beating down and we were hot. God knows how the players must of felt.

So we were off and ready for the 2nd half with Wiggy getting the better of Bennet, but couldn’t get his shot away. Sckarr broke well and ran at Grinrod, this time Grinrod was too good for him, and his slide tackle was perfect. The ball went for a corner, which was well handled by Reid.

5 minutes in we started to string some excellent passes. Wiggy held the ball well and beat his man. His forward pass to Spike was great. Spike found some space and had a shot, but it was too close to the keeper. This was much better from Walden.

The 50/50 was called and I wasn’t really listening. I asked Colin what the number was and realised I had won £83. What a result! Thank you very much. I missed about 5 minutes collecting my prize. I bought Malcolm a drink for his troubles.

Back to the match and we looked good. The passing was better and we started to attack the box more. Wiggy and Gregory looked sharp which gave Spike, Noble and Mashy time to join in with the attack. We just needed that final ball into the box to latch onto.

Turner was introduced to the game for Grinrod to provide more fire power. Grinrod played well. I didn’t realise he was a left back. Usually he is much further forward, where I think he plays his best football.

13 minutes in and we looked in control. F and W had not had a shot on goal.

15ish minute in and we had a free kick into our own half. We took the ball quickly and found Wiggy in space, who ended up one on one with the keeper. The referee brought the play back because he was not ready, and a player was still down. As you can imagine the fans had a pop at the referee.

More skills by Mashy who gave a lovely pass to Gregory in the box. Gregory chested down well but the defender got across him, just before he was about to take his shot. The ball was played to the right back, and Gregory tried to get ball back, but got booked for a shoulder barge. It may have been a strong challenge but it was never a yellow card.

You could tell the F and W defence where getting rattled. Wiggy played well and was awarded a penalty. Unfortunately for Wig, the keeper guessed the right was and saved the ball.

All was not doom and gloom, as the saved penalty resulted in a throw on. The crowd were getting right behind the Bloods, and called for the Beast. The Beast launched his throw into the mixer. Murphy got the better of the centre back and in true ‘Boss Man’ fashion, beat the keeper with a fine header. 2-1. Come on you bloods. Noble took a knock as the goal went in but was soon on his feet after some treatment from the magic sponge.

At this point I had to move back to the shade as the sun was far too hot. We had a line of fans standing with their backs near the cabins, to try and get the few inches of shade. We now had a life line. Mrs Nash needed that cold flannel again!

F and W put the pressure back on and had some good chance. There best effort of the half, Croll carried the ball up and over the bar for a corner.

Once we got back in the game the Beast pushed forward. He took a throw on, which was headed back to him. He got a cross in and I thought Gregory was going to try a bicycle kick. Sckarr, who was F and W’s best player in the first half broke, but Noble ‘Nobby’ ran with him and produced a very important challenge to win the ball.

F and W pushed on to try and kill the game off with a corner which was confidently caught by Croll.

More crosses game in and Mashy cleared well with a header. Another corner to F and W, but Croll made another brave catch, giving the forwards no chance.

We got back into the game again and Sam had a very good effort which went wide of the post.

75 minutes in and pressure by Walden was mounting. Beast had another great throw on which Mashy got his foot on, but was blocked by the defence. F and W started to park the bus. It was time for another water break.

80 minutes in and Turner showed some first class skill. He ran up the wing, and played the ball around the defender to run onto. He held the ball up, and waited for Wig to get into the box. The cross was perfect and Wig chested it down, and smashed it in the back of the net, to make it 2-2. This is why I love non-league football.

F and W pushed for a winner but the defence didn’t take any chances and cleared the ball well.

Veteran Sticksy, came on with about 5 minutes from time and replaced Gregory. Yet another very good game from Gregory. Sam, your first league goal is coming.

Sticksy played up front, and you could tell this worried the defenders. Wig and Turner worked well again, and Graeme sent in a cross for Sticksy, but it was just too high.

Drane was introduced to the match for Mashy. Mashy had a great game and looked threatening.

Damn, Damn, Damn!! Just as I thought we could win, or at least get a draw, F and W won a soft penalty. If you could hear the tone of my voice on the Dictaphone, you would have thought the world had ended. The penalty was taken well and we were now losing 3-2.

We didn’t give up, and continued to battle and Sticksy came close with a very good header, which floated over the bar.

After a very frustrating last 5 minutes, F and W used there experience and slowed the play down. A few of their players hit the deck more time the Drogba did against Barcelona, in the semi-final of the Champions League Cup. You have to hand it to them they knew what they were doing.

The match ended up Bloods 2 – Felixstowe and Walton 3. Personally I could not have asked more of the players in the 2nd half. We were undone by 2 brilliant goals in the first half. The fight back was almost a fairy tale ending. Well done lads for not giving up in tough conditions. We will be back!

Fans Man of the Match was difficult. A lot of the lads did well. I had to base it on the full 90 minutes and not just the first half. So the fans man of the match goes to Joe ‘The Boss’ Murphy. Mashy you came a very close 2nd but Joe’s goal just tipped it for me.

Next up we visit Mildenhall on Tuesday 25th. Keep on working hard lads and we shall get that win.

Join us for FA Cup action against Cheshunt

Meet Sam Gregory

Saffron Walden Committee Member John Power recently met up with the Club’s new Striker, Sam Gregory for a Q & A Session.

1. JP: Tell us about your football background.

SG: After school and college football in Chelmsford I joined the City Academy and played in the Reserve’s Team in 2013.

2. JP: Why did you choose to play for Saffron Walden?

SG: I wanted to go out on loan because I want more game time. I spoke with Jason who invited me to Catons Lane for training and I enjoyed this; in fact I played a few matches here on loan last Season.

3. JP: Now you are the First Team striker what are your biggest problems?

SG: Well, playing against big and burley Central Defenders is a problem. I am fairly new in playing men’s football.

4. JP: How has the Season will develop for you?

SG: First I want to get my confidence up. This I can do by scoring goals and I want the team to finish as high as possible in the league. My own target is to score goals to reach double figures at least for the Season.

5. JP: Tell us about yourself?

SG: I am 19 years old and I live in Chelmsford with my mum. She is very supportive of my football and she comes to the matches when she can. I have finished at college and I now work as a soccer youth coach.

6. JP: Moving away from football, are you into karaoke?

SG: Certainly not! I do not have a voice and the only time I sing is when I am in my car on my own.

7. JP: What was the first single record you ever bought?

SG: I have never bought a record as all my music is on my phone. My favourite singer is Drake.

8. JP: What are you like at home with your domestic and cooking skills? Who would you invite to dinner and what would you cook for them?

SG: I certainly do my bit at home and in the kitchen. My dinner guests would be Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Rihanna! I would prepare steak with all the trimmings.

9. JP: Take us through the best goal you have ever scored.

SG: This was at Melbourne Park about 5 years ago versus Stanway. I was at the half way line, the ball fell to me and I volleyed it first time and with my weaker left foot I lobbed it over the keeper.

10. JP: Who is your Sporting Hero?

SG: David Beckham.

11. JP: If your house was burning down, which one possession would you save?

SG: My mum!

12. JP: Which TV programme can’t you miss?

SG: I don’t really watch much TV

13. JP: What was the last film you saw?

SG: Jurassic World

14. JP: What is your favourite holiday destination?

SG: Magalluf in Majorca

JP: Thank you Sam for your time, all the fans wish you and the Team all the best for the rest of Season.

UP THE BLOODS!
